First Aid for Dogs and Cats

Does your dog have a small superficial wound?  Carefully cut the hairs around the wound short so they don't pierce the wound. Cover the wound with a compress so that the cut hairs do not get into the wound. Then rinse the wound thoroughly with NATRIUMCHLORIDE 0.9%. Then treat the wound with DERMAZYME, a honey cream. After that, distract your dog with a meal or a walk. Avoid having the dog lick or scratch the wound. A bandage, collar or Medical Pet Shirt may be a solution in this case. Keep a close eye on the wound. Is the spot getting bigger or does it seem to be getting inflamed? Then consult the veterinarian.

Tips for a bandage around the paw:

1. Carefully cut the hairs around the wound short so they do not puncture the wound. Cover the wound with a compress so that the cut hairs do not enter the wound.
2. Then rinse the wound thoroughly with NATRIUMCHLORIDE 0.9%.
3. Then treat the wound with DERMAZYME, a honey cream.
4. Cover the wound with a JELONET compress.
5. Apply a small amount of ointment between the toes, not forgetting the side nail (the thumb). Examples of an appropriate ointment are Flamigel (for normal skin) or Neo-cutigenol (if the skin is itchy or looks redder).
6. Apply a small amount of cotton wool (WATTEN Zig Zag Hartmann) between the toes each time, making sure not to forget the side nail (the thumb). Due to the pressure and friction of the bandage, animals easily get pressure wounds caused by the pressure of the nail on the skin. The cotton wool serves to prevent the nail from pressing on the skin and the ointment makes the cotton wool less likely to shift while you place your bandage.
7. Starting from the bottom of the paw to the top, place a bandage with SOFFBAN wadding.
8. Starting from the bottom of the paw to the top, place a bandage with Vetflex. The important thing here is to unroll the bandage bit by bit and then place it on the SOFFBAN. Do not tighten or pull as you wrap the bandage around the paw. Avoid pulling when placing, the bandage is elastic, so when tightening, you cut off the blood circulation. When in doubt, it is best to have the bandage placed by your veterinarian or veterinary assistant.
9. If you have an active dog, best place another layer on top with tensoplast. Idem as described at point 4.
10. Avoid getting the bandage wet and never leave a bandage on longer than 1 day, unless placed by your veterinarian or veterinary assistant. If the dog, a few (or more) hours after placing the bandage, no longer wants to support itself you should remove the bandage. This may indicate that the bandage has sagged and is preventing good circulation in the leg.
11. Always have a wound followed up by your veterinarian and be careful when placing a bandage. An animal can hardly tell you that his leg is asleep (by sagging of a bandage or by tightening a bandage too hard), that he is in pain because of pressure of a side nail in the skin or that the wound is inflamed and itches a lot,...
